UEMOA, Afristat launch Regional Statistics Programme
UEMOA is working to improve the collection and use of economic statistics within its eight member states. Directors general of national statistics agencies took part in a workshop to launch the Regional Statistics Programme (PRS-UEMOA) 2015-20 from 1 to 4 March in Bamako. The PRS is the result of a co-operation agreement between the UEMOA Commission and the Economic and Statistical Observatory for Sub-Saharan Africa (AFRISTAT), signed in November 2015. The Bamako workshop was an opportunity to discuss with statistics agency heads the contents of the programme and its expected outcomes. Under the terms of the agreement, AFRISTAT will conduct surveys in each of the eight countries on employment and the informal sector, reform national accounting practices and update business statistics to conform to international standards. Workshop participants viewed presentations on the components of the plan and reviewed a proposed timetable for its implementation. Established in 1993, AFRISTAT has 19 member states in West and Central Africa. Its mission is to contribute to the development of economic, social and environmental statistics and build the capacity of member states in the area of statistics.
