Sharing experiences on local cross-border co-operation

The Sahel and West Africa Club Secretariat (SWAC/OECD) was invited to a workshop of the West Africa Division’s Governance Working Group organised by the Swiss Co-operation Office in Mali on 28 July in Bamako. This provided an opportunity to share SWAC’s experiences and the results of its work on cross-border co-operation in West Africa. The workshop brought together the programme officers and partners involved in decentralisation and local governance initiatives for the five priority countries covered by the West Africa Division (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Niger). The meeting focused on planning Switzerland’s support to two priority issues: the governance of extractive resources in West Africa and local cross-border co-operation knowledge management. Mr. Lawali Dambo, Research Professor at the University of Niamey and contributor to the SWAC/OECD work on cross-border co-operation and policy networks, presented the Secretariat’s work. The SWAC Secretariat is currently preparing a report on cross-border co-operation opportunities and challenges, which will be published within the OECD West African Studies series by the end of 2016.
