Sahel Irrigation Initiative Programme: More, better and faster
The CILSS is implementing the regional component of an ambitious multi-stakeholder project which aims to more than double the irrigated areas of six Sahelian countries to 1 million hectares by 2020. Less than 3% of cultivated land areas in West Africa are irrigated compared to more than 28.7% in North Africa. Funded by the World Bank Group, the Sahel Irrigation Initiative Programme (SIIP) covers Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal. Among its aims, the Programme seeks to scale-up good practices and support “promising projects” that are likely to attract more investments in the irrigation sector. By reviving and attracting greater investment, stakeholders are hoping to build resilience and accelerate growth in the Sahel and West Africa. The SIIP Programme was conceived following the ambitious objectives set out in the Declaration of Dakar in November 2013, and brings together the regional organisations (ECOWAS, UEMOA and CILSS), the private sector and development partners under one common platform.
