On 17 October in Abidjan, Akinwumi Adesina, the African Development Bank President and John Kufuor, the former president of Ghana and current co-chair of the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition, opened the first official meeting of the group, African Leaders for Nutrition. The goal of this group, which is composed of several major figures who work on food security in Africa, is to strengthen the political dialogue between the continent’s leaders in order to convince them to make nutrition issues a greater priority. The group also aims to increase African leaders’ political and financial commitments as recommended by the second Sustainable Development Goal (“Eliminate hunger, ensure food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”). One of the first actions of the group was to initiate the creation of a nutritional responsibility evaluation form to help governments monitor their progress on nutrition at the national and regional levels.
